When an angler thinks of a great outing, he usually dreams of that perfect presentation just above a feeding foe. Not to discourage the often more effective categories of patterns, but it’s hard for even a beginner angler not to quickly become addicted to the feeling of catching a beauty on a dry.
These are the most deadly dry patterns for North American streams. Assortments for other regions coming soon.
Fly-Guide to The Dries 10 Can: Two of each pattern below included in each can.
Elk Hair Caddis Tan
The classic caddis pattern best fished near the bank, especially downstream or downwind from overhanging trees or other vegetation. (Specialty point hook; #14)
A versatile pattern best fished mid to late summer at the banks of streams. For bass and panfish, fish with short twitches along brush and submerged trees. (Specialty point hook; Standard; #12)
A great emerger caddis, best fished when cast where slow water meets fast water where other patterns would become too difficult to see and allowing the fly to dead drift. (Klinkhammer hook; #14)
An essential pattern for both lakes and rivers best fished as the day warms up and presented as if it fell off rock or from overhanging trees. (Specialty point hook; #12)
Royal Humpy Red
This highly visible fly is best fished in low light. It is buoyant, colorful, and has a profile matching a wide variety of insects. (Specialty point hook; #12)
